Recently I have created a couple of billboard shaders for unity. They are ready to use and 100% free.
You can find a download on the assets page
While unity does use the billboard thechnique for rendering grass, distant trees and particles, it offers no direct way for us users to create billboards directly.
When we wanted to create billboards we had to make use of workarounds. One way to fake billboards I found was rotating a plane towards the camera every frame , which seems like lots of unnecessary work and ultimately fail if there are two or more cameras.
The best solution seemed to be a billboard shader. However neither the wiki nor the asset store had a free, ready to use billboard shader available.
Thus I decided to dig myself into shader scripting and work something out on my own. Prior to this I had no experience with programming shaders at all and I had some respect for it. But I had already taught myself scrip and there is some documentation to be found so I just gave it a shot.
I was pretty satised with the results of my work. Therefore I felt obliged to share the results with the unity community. Hopefully you find them usefull
This package contains a couple of billboard shaders. Beyond the billboard rendering, the different shaders use a combination of color, alpha blending and alpha cut off to be applicable for different situations.
From simple texture rendering over cut out technique to a ready-to-use progressbar shader.
Documentation on the single shaders is included.
I like free stuff and I bet you do too. Therefore this package is released directly into the public domain. You are free to use it in any commercial or non-commercial work without limitations.
Crediting me is not required but appreciated.
If you really like this package, I'd felt honored if you gave me a donation.
